It was an honour to open the brand new Mitchell Freeway Principal Shared Path (PSP) and Scarborough Beach Road footbridge today with Transport Minister Rita Saffioti.

 

The opening of the new paths means that you can now cycle, walk or run from Hutton Street to the Perth CBD on a dedicated, freeflow path.

 

This PSP is the critical link that we have been missing between Hutton Street and Glendalough Station. Delivering this 2.1 kilometre path allows people in Balcatta to ride, walk and run on a high-quality, uninterrupted path that saves time and improves safety by no longer requiring them to cross over the freeway on their journey.

 

As part of this project, upgrades were undertaken at the PSP through to Vincent Street in Leederville and at Telford Crescent in Stirling, resulting in a smoother and more enjoyable journey of more than five kilometres.

 

The PSP includes a 60 metre-long, seven-metre-wide bridge over Scarborough Beach Road and two new underpasses at the Hutton Street on/off-ramps to provide a safe and completely off-road experience for pedestrians and cyclists. In another first for the PSP network, our impressive locally made bridge features separate facilities for people riding and walking. With a four-metre-wide bicycle path and two-metre-wide pedestrian path, this bridge is improving safety and connectivity to Glendalough Station for our community.

 

As the biggest single investment in WA's PSP network to date, this project was delivered as part of the Mitchell Freeway Southbound Widening from Cedric to Vincent Street which was also completed recently.

 

Investing in cycling infrastructure is good for the WA economy and supports local jobs, with more than 150 jobs estimated to have been supported during the construction phase of this project.

 

Great for cyclists, great for traffic and great for locals!
